Edlingham

After a lie-in and leisurely breakfast, we set out for the supermarket, stopping en route at Powburn for a short walk with Louie, and then at Edlingham.

Every time we pass Edlingham we mention stopping to look at the castle, and today we did! But first we visited the church, which was apparently built in the 11th century on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon church, and has been modified several times over the centuries. It's quite simple on the inside, but has a fabulous stained-glass window.

The castle dates mainly from the 14th century, but a manor house of the or 12th or13th century is thought to be concealed beneath the later building. The defences were added during the mid-14th century.

Nearby there is an imposing viaduct, once part of the train route from Alnwick to Cornhill. MrM and I walked through the fields on a footpath, hoping to look on to the viaduct but, unfortunately, there's no public access. A very pleasant walk all the same, in beautiful countryside (see extras).
