Travellers Upon Canals

Where else could it be?

We are in Venice (from where we'll be picked up to drive to our conference in Croatia on Saturday). Saw this down the alley our hotel is on. This place would be ridiculously picturesque without the gondolas, but with them... thus creating a huge problem for a blipper; have therefore added an extra, or two... The queen of peeling walls, Hamp5on, would be in heaven here.

Today's poem is "Resurrection", by R S Thomas:

Easter. The grave clothes of winter
are still here, but the sepulchre
is empty. A messenger tells us
how a stone has been rolled
from the mind, and a tree lightens
the darkness with its blossom.
There are travellers upon the roads
who have heard music blown
from a bare bough, and a child
tells us how the accident
of last year, a machine stranded
beside the way for lack
of petrol is covered with flowers.

These travellers have heard a lot of music today, but I think the sound of opera spilling out of a church suits this place best. And if it weren't for Venice, we'd be able to say that a city without cars would never work...
