Stift Klosterneuburg

Hubby and I caught the train to Vienna with friends to visit Klosterneuburg. This town dates back to 1113 when Prince Margave Leopold III relocated here and built the castle in 1114.
In 1133 the Canons Regular of St. Augustine to took over Klosterneuburg, where they were to spend centuries developing the monastery into a centre of religious life, culture and scholarship. To this day the Augustinian Canons work in this spirit and according to the monastic Rule of Saint Augustine.
The Klosterneuberg wine estate, which is the oldest and largest in Austria, has produced high quality wines since 1114. The vaulted wine cellars extend over 4 levels to a depth of 36 metres.
We took 2 tours - the sacred tour through the cloister and the wine cellars which finished up with a wine tasting. The complex is very impressive and we will go back sometime to do the rest of the tours. Here is a link if you are interested in reading about it. I have also put some more photos on Flickr.
