Beach replenishment

Bournemouth Beach Management Scheme is a programme of work, planned from 2015 to 2032

The cost of phase one (2015-2020) is £17.5m approximately. The total cost of the entire project (phases 1 – 3) is £50m approximately, with the majority funded by the Environment Agency and a small proportion by Council funding and local levy.

The sand is piped to the beach by a sinkerline, part of which can be seen behind the dredger.

At the seaward end the sinkerline is coupled to a flexible riser pipe section and flexible floating pipeline.  During operations the multicat (support vessel) Nero takes care of the floating section and connects it to the loaded dredger.

Sand is mixed with a considerable amount of water in the dredger's hopper to assist it being pumped through the sinkerline.
