Weathercock House

Also known as the German House, the weathercock on the top of the steeple acts as the symbol for the area. It appears on maps, road signs, shop signs and advertisements.

This Ijinkan house is unusual as it was built of bricks and mortar at a time when most buildings were timber.  Whilst there are similar foreign settlements in Yokohama and Nagasaki the ones here are the better preserved.  Sadly, of the one thousand western-style houses originally built from the 1870's onward only thirty remain.
