Axel and Kevin

Meet Axel...a Pitbull Terrier... yes that breed who have a reputation for being ferocious, dangerous and not a lovable pet. Yet here he is being gentle, totally trustworthy and very loving. While he is a very effective South African security system, he is also a wonderful pet.

Today we went to Kevin and Bianca's home for the most wonderful lunch - they made a curried lamb 'potjie' which is a slow cooked stew in a 3 legged cast iron pot on an outdoor open fire (see extra photo), a traditional South African dish. Durban is also famous for its curries which originates from the large Indian population who settled there when the British brought them to Natal as indentured labour to work on the vast sugar plantations. Durban has the largest Indian community in Africa and has the largest Indian population of any city outside of India. A Durban curry is generally hotter than most Indian dishes we are used to in the UK and includes vegetables and potatoes. It is served with sambals, which are usually coconut, yogurt and cucumber, diced tomato and onion and chutney. My boys loved the meal and how different it was from the curries they usually have in England.

Tomorrow...a tour of the Moses Mabhida stadium
