World's oldest fossils..

..nearly. There are some older ones in Australia..

2nd of our geology field trips, not the best day weather wise, but could have been far worse.. Heading south Scourie, saw some Scourie dykes, the Moine thrust, pipe rocks, faults and intrusions at Loch Assynt, limestone cliffs and inbricate structures at Stronchrubie, layers of Lewisian Gneiss and Quartzite (with an age gap of 2,000,000,000 years, or 40% of the total age of the planet), Toridonian sandstone, stromatolites, and the site of a large meteor impact (one of only 5 known worldwide).. That's quite a lot to fit into one day!

And it's our 34th wedding anniversary too. Back in time to go out for a meal in the Kylesku hotel. 34 years, and every day of it has been wonderful..

These stromatolites are 1,200,000,000 years old, and the earliest known life forms of algal mounds. There are some earlier, older ones in Australia.
