Crispy Snack
With Easter weekend approaching and the though the you do fish on Good Friday, I couldn’t resist a snack of crispy whitebait for lunch today.
I thought that would set me up for the real thing on Friday — a complete meal centred on fish. Trouble is it took me a while to decide on what type of fish it should be. The fish counter at one of our local supermarkets has an offer on whole salmon; the nearest rival supermarket has an offer on cod loin.
That’s when I backed out and decided to settle for the whitebait at the local pub in preparation for the meal tomorrow. I have had the whitebait here a number of times now. It is inexpensive, filling, and dare I say it, you can eat with your fingers.
Last time I was here daughter Claire treated me to them, and short of a full fritto misto di mare it is one of my favourite lunchtime snacks at the town centre pub.
But back to decisions — in the end I copped out and called at both supermarkets and bought both cod and salmon. One for the freezer and one for Good Friday. It will have to be the flaky white cod though, baked in the oven, perhaps in a little wine — my wife suffers an allergy to salmon. Really, there was no need for decision making.
But I couldn’t resist the thought of the salmon, and the prospect of me indulging myself on several occasions over the coming weeks.
