Maundy Thursday
This is Maundy Money, given to an aunt of my Mother's , who gave it to her on her 21st birthday in 1948.
Maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum - that means commandment and is a commemoration of the Last Supper.
The tradition is for the Queen to give out 2 purses to an equal number of men and women, one for each year of her life, so 90 this year.A red purse contains an allowance for clothes and provisions ( a voucher for M&S perhaps?!!!) and a white purse with silver coins.
In my extras is the lid of the rather lovely box.
