Stainer's Crucifixion

The conductor had just departed the
rostrum after the afternoon rehearsal.
There had been an open invitation to the
public to join the choir for this Easter
oratorio in the beautiful church of St.Mary
the Virgin. This church, standing on one
of the highest points in the town of Ross-
on-Wye, overlooks the valley of the River
Wye and was dedicated in 1316. There is
evidence that suggests the site contained
an earlier Saxon and Norman church.
The stained glass in the East window dates
back to 1430 and was recovered in 1732
from another church which was being
demolished and expertly refitted here.
