A surprise belated birthday gift arrived in the post today. My lovely niece took the time to source an original 45 vinyl single of the song that was #1 in the uk charts when I was born.

Slightly miffed to learn it was a Beatles cover, she did a bit of research and decided it made a cool story worthy of sharing after all. So, here's the story...

The Overlanders toured with The Beatles in the early 60s. Their lead singer met a girl on the tour who ran away with the band and finished the tour with them in England. This is who Lennon and McCartney wrote the song about. The Beatles never planned to release it as a single themselves so they gave it to The Overlanders. Rock history right here on Blip.
