Wood Anemone
It was a bright and sunny spring morning, so I took the opportunity for an early walk, to check out Thorpe Wood where I'll be starting to record breeding bird transects later this week. It's normally one of the best local spots for wood anemones, but though there were quite a lot of leaves, the flowers seemed very sparse. The leaves of hazel and woodland hawthorn were unfurling, and there was plenty of bird activity, including a couple of very quarrelsome jays.
At lunchtime I conveyed Ben to Stamford as usual, and was just about to go shopping when he rang to say that his tutor was off - it would be so helpful if they could text students to avoid a wasted journey! We were back home by 2.15 - while we'd been away Chris and Alex had returned from four days in Hamburg, on a friends stag do. Considering that they'd spent most of their time in bars and had lived on a diet of Donner kebabs and currywurst, they looked remarkably healthy - though both were very, very tired!
