Derelict Sunday and St. Mary

My mother-in-law found this statue while clearing their attic and local catholic community recognized it coming originally from the village bell tower. I was wondering how this statue got to the attic? Was it disposed of when communists took over or was it hidden there not to be destroyed by the atheist supporters of the communist party? It can be returned now to its original place, possibly after as many as 60 or more years. I'm glad I could be witness of it.
