Urban setting

View down Bolshaya Dorogomilovskaya Street.  Previously a farm owned by one Ivan Dorogomilov, a boyar, the area (and street) has since the 13th century known after him.  Frequently flooded (in 1908 in this old photo) the area was redeveloped once the embankment along the Moscow River had been properly constructed.  It became a prestigious residential area in communist times - and still is somewhat.  In 1938, the city demolished the area's 16th century church, widened the street and started building today's existing housing blocks.  Also known for its WWII barricades (here).
