Kitchen Cove, 9.55am, 19.02.16

I missed my Saturday blip of Kitchen Cove last week as I was larking around in Bristol. Today I had to nip down a bit earlier as we have been larking around again, this time in Schull. A cold grey day with not a glimmer of light, but I was just in time to catch this fisherman going out to his boat in his amphibious dingy - it has wheels in the front. He goes out everyday whatever the weather - I think he's catching shrimp and prawns. He's not big on chatting.

Off to Schull for an adventure with my friend Hannah who knew the whereabouts of a holy well.  This one was out on Castlepoint - the most spectacular setting - a peninsula jutting out into the steely sea with a tower house right. Hannah and her chap had been out earlier in the week to find the well and Danny had marked it with a white stick. Not much to  see you might think, but the water coming out from the base of the rock was cold and fresh, and the watercress was flourishing. This is dedicated to St Brendan and the water is good, especially for cattle. You were meant to kneel on the slabs of stone to do your devotions.

Having come this far and a tower house in our sight it would have been rude not to continue. We were amazed by this place though for there is no road and no quay, just a tiny ancient boreen leading to it. It sits on its rock, sturdily made but so remote and inaccessible. It was bought not so long ago and they occasionally come down for weekends. You'd have to be pretty hardy.

Returning to the car, and washing our wellies, a mink suddenly appeared - bold as brass and very interested in us. Shame they have such a bad reputation for he was rather sweet  - a young one I think.

We returned to Schull and visited our hairdresser in her home - so civilised.
And it's Himself's birthday. A bit of a low key one as we did most of the celebrating last week in Bristol. He was being creative in the old church, whilst the hairdresser was getting creative with me - the mitts are back on and he was frozen!

And more info about yesterday's very special well.
