Ramparts at St. Malo
Our outing today from Rennes was to the walled city of Saint-Malo, a hour's drive to the west on the north coast of Brittany. The British and Americans bombed it mercilessly during World War II, leaving the interior flattened, but the ramparts mostly remained; it took a dozen years to rebuild it more or less precisely as it was.
The buildings inside the wall rise high above it, as you can seen in the distant background in the first extra photo. I took that view during our walk in the morning around the promontory of Aleth (Alet) south of the the city, which was a Gallo-Roman settlement at least from the first century A.D.; you see remains of a Roman wall in the image. Our walk also passed ruins of Aleth's 13th century cathedral, which you see in the second photo below.
Posted the next morning, following a lovely dinner out.
