A Day of Water and Waterfalls

The weather forecast was sadly correct and we have driven through light rain and heavy rain today since leaving Wanaka early doors. We likened it to a dreich day driving through Scotland and, until we reached the rainforest, the landscape was very similar to that of Scotland.
We passed our first 'road incidents' since arriving in New Zealand, a very large camper van in a ditch and a car submerged in a creek! It makes you realise that these roads take no prisoners if you do not treat them with respect. I spotted several new creek names to add to my collection: Trickle Creeks; Serpentine Creek; Gout Creek; Gunboat Creek; Dizzy Creek and Glitter Burn Creek. When we stopped in Haast to share a warmed up blueberry muffin (these have become a habit!) and a cuppa, I fell in to conversation with a lovely Canadian woman who was woofing around the country. She didn't like the creek names because they suggested ownership, I said I liked them because they gave me a feeling of the history of the place and I liked their often quirkiness.
All this means that we are now holed up in our own bit of rainforest in Rainforest Retreat Camp site in Franz Josef, having had to cancel our bike ride up to see Fox Glacier and keeping fingers crossed that Tony's heli hike will still happen tomorrow, meanwhile the rain beats down on the roof.....
