Grate Sound

Hmm, when I think of music as 'grating', I can see my old man groaning at the sound of the Beatles and Stones way back in the Sixties. However, since the time my kids discovered the joys of pop music, I understand how music that can induce one person into a jelly of joyful delight will probably have no more aesthetic appeal than the grating of chalk on a blackboard to another.

But I'd never thought of 'grating' as a musical art-form. Until I saw this innovative 2-piece band eking out a crust on the hot street. Both multi-instrumentalists, the guy follows in the path much trodden by Dylan and a host of other performers with his harmonica-guitar combination. But the young lady is a positive virtuoso on the cheese grater, while simulaneouly blowing on an instrument that looks (and sounds) like a drain cleaning pipe.

My father's opinion of the music would have been: Innovative, but a bit grating. . . I think that's the first time we've ever agreed.
