Ever Since the World Began . . .

And the mist parted. And the sun and the earth and the sky were born. And each day, they were reborn. And born again . . .

We had a foggy start to our day, and of course, I went a little bit crazy, stopping everywhere I could think of for pictures. My travels took me to the burnt cabin, to the little pond at Skytop Farm, and to the Arboretum, where there was indeed MUCH to see.

The main photo above is a reflection of the morning sky on the lily pond. The little pond is thawed now, and I am having such fun with my camera. There are no plants sticking up yet to ruin the perfect reflections. The sun looked almost like the moon to me, as it peeped out from behind the clouds.

One of the fantastic things about mist is what it does with the light. It makes the sunrise more diffuse and photographable (if that is even a word) because it gentles the light, and so you never get those little green sun spots, even when shooting directly into the sunrise, as I tend to do.

I visited one of my favorite trees, the red elm at the Arboretum, and it was looking especially fine against the golden morning light. There is a shot of the red elm in the extras. That shot sparred with the one above for "top shot" for this day.

I've also included a photo of Skytop Farm Pond in the extras, as it's been a while since I've posted a picture of it. I find it especially enchanting when it's foggy for some reason; I think it's because the mist dissolves the barriers between the land and the water and the sky; in the mist, they all become one, and I see how it was before the sky and the water and the land were born.

As I was standing by the lily pond watching the light, I was thinking how beautiful it was, and I realized that this must have been what it felt like at the very beginning of things, watching everything be born. So fresh and lovely and mystical, full of such beauty and promise. Sunrise each day is one of my favorite bits of magic, but of course all of you know that about me by now.

The soundtrack song was originally written and performed by Survivor, and I loved it then, and I played it over and over. The song is from their 1982 hit record, Eye of the Tiger. I'm including the original Survivor version with Dave Bickler as lead singer a cover by Tommy Shaw of Styx, a version by Jimi Jamison (who took over as lead singer for Survivor in the mid-80s), and this personal fave: a fantastic cover by Arnel Pineda and the Zoo Band, the group Pineda sang with before he became Journey's new frontman a few years back. It's a lovely little tune called Ever Since the World Began.

Still we walk this road together
We try and go as far as we can
And we have waited for this moment in time
Ever since the world began . . .
