Any Port in a Storm
Another day and another port, still on the Moray coast. The intent had been to go for a walk along the coast, but while the rain stopped from time to time, and there were sunny intervals it never stopped long enough for the walk.
The photograph shows Findochty, a small port slightly to the East of Buckie. Although dating back to the 1400s it grew as a fishing port in the 1700s, but later was largely superseded by the larger town of Buckie. It now consist mainly of a marina and a sizeable number of former fishermen's' cottages. These are huddled close together in much the same way as in Aberdeen's Fittie area, only more so, and more numerous.
The cottages are all immaculate, and I suspect it would be difficult to find a fisherman, other possibly than of the recreational sort.
We proceeded along the coast by car for a while before abandoning the coast. I had decided it was an afternoon for a more indoor form of tourism, so we went for a distillery tour. We arrived at the Benromach Distillery just in time to join the last tour of the day. The tour was followed by a "small" acquisition (or two) in the Distillery shop.
Acquisitions included a bottle of organic whisky which I have never tried. As I was driving I could not taste a dram, so in order to find out what it is like I had to buy a full bottle. The other bottle was whisky matured in Italian wine barrels. Another variety which I have not tried previously as far as I remember.
Slightly poorer we adjourned for a carvery roast dinner in the outskirts of Aberdeen. The weather remained variable to wet for the remainder of the day, some of the showers were very heavy. The coastal walk will have to wait until another day.
