The Spring Melt?

Suddenly warm winds arrive and the sun shines. The temperature rises to 12° C and I can sit outside and drink my morning coffee.
The snow doesn’t melt so quickly because it reflects the heat away so where there is just snow not much changes. However, once a piece of ground shows through things change very rapidly. The ground is warmed by the sun and melts the snow immediately around the hole, exposing more ground causing even more snow to disappear.
This picture was taken just before lunch, as I went to work. When I returned home this evening it looked very different, with the path almost clear of snow.
My driveway or the Artic ocean - dark ground or dark water - it’s the same effect even if it is on a different scale.
