Everyday I Write The Book

The way to the stars ...

... is as much through love as it is through endeavour.

This is the RAF Bomber Command memorial in Green Park. I've enormous sadness for everything that happens in war. Bomber Command was controversial and it was often indiscriminate in its operations; but the majority of men and women who served in it were young, believed in defeating the Nazi regime, and were battered into submission by psychological blunt instruments that forced them to comply. Saying no wasn't really an option and most of us wouldn't have had the courage to refuse to fly over Dresden and drop bombs.

The memorial itself is impressive and human. The figures look lost and sad, which is probably how it was for most of them in the decades after the war finished.

Anyway ... this was part of a rather lovely day out. TSM and I went to the 100 years of Vogue exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, which was quite fantastic. Beautiful photographs, get along to see it if you can. Interesting that Vogue was born in the middle of the First World War and also had some very interesting second world war coverage. One photograph even managed to make gas masks look sexy. What makes it such a great exhibition is that fashion illustrates history in such a personal way. Very very good.

Then walked four miles from Trafalgar Square to Kensington via St James's Park, Green Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Had a very late lunch in Whole Foods, did a bit of shopping and then came home. Lovely day, and beautiful Spring sunshine. We were very happy together. Made me realise how lucky I am compared to past generations and what they have endured...
