AD 700 - Sutton Hoo
Beneath a crescent sun we stood
upon a meadow damp with dew
beside the fluttering tree branched wood
we saw, or so it seemed to us
A solemn march of ancient ones
Across a field of time gone by
A proud standing Bracken, a monarch gone
An oaken ship, a chanting throng
With steady pace they made their way
In twilight sorrow and dismay.
In the 7th century AD, a King (Bracken OE) received a magnificent burial at Sutton Hoo, in East Anglia. A ship was hauled up from the river, a burial chamber was erected in the middle of it, and a stupendous collection of magnificent objects - gold and silver brooches and dishes, the sword of state, drinking horns and a lyre - was set in the burial chamber.
Note: This was taken at Sutton Hoo an Anglo Saxon Burial Ground Nr Woodbridge in Suffolk where Bracken assumed the role of the Saxon King by standing in the prow of a reconstruction of a Saxon Long Boat!
