Echoes

On the recording, the shot could be heard clearly. As the sound died away, the recorder's automatic level control amplified the background sounds until the first echo came crashing in and forced the level down again. The sequence was repeated, less and less clearly, for each subsequent echo.

The overall effect was of the sound of breathing being gradually lost in the ambient sounds.
