Fanfare!

At the entrance to Christchurch, on the northern motorway, this eyecatching sculpture glistens and flashes as its fans, or pinwheels, whirl around in the wind. Yesterday was a perfect day to see it in action, animated by wind and sun, with ferocious winds lashing Canterbury.

'Fanfare' is a 25-metre tall sphere, covered in 360 spinning metal pinwheels, and is one of the largest public artworks in New Zealand. Neil Dawson, the sculptor, describes it as basically just a ball with propellers on it. It's come in for its share of accolade and criticism, but I for one really like it.
