At A Table For Two

This, it is said, is where they sat
when they ate their last meal
together. So they, too,
must have gazed at this view,
such as it is, (unless they
only had eyes for each other)
as they chewed food and sipped wine.
Some say both knew
what would happen, later,
others suggest it was unplanned.
Now we occupy their table for two
and attempt to understand
why they did what they chose to do.
Or did just one choose that option
and the other have no say in the matter?
