Marble Mountain Caves

Danang was where the Americans landed their troops at the start of the “American War” and where they had their largest military base in Vietnam. The beach was a favourite spot for R & R and was well loved  by the marines who must have hated leaving it to return to their duties.
Today it was quiet and windy. A misty haze hung over it which gave it a mysterious edge and we didn’t linger.
We spent more time climbing up one of the Marble Mountains and enjoyed the spectacular views over the city from the top. The middle of the mountain is a massive cave - my first marble cave I think. During the last war the Vietcong used it as a hospital and it went undiscovered throughout the war despite it’s proximity to the US Military Base. It has a tiled floor and shrines to various gods and to Buddha. Definitely more interesting and impressive than most caves and cathedrals I have visited.

Lunch and a visit to a Cham museum (Hindu sculptures) before a dramatic drive over the Misty Mountain and on to Saigon/Ho Chi Min City.
