A Quiet Place In The Woods

Jeremy (see extra) was our guide today on a walk in the woods.  About 20 hearty souls came out at 8:45 a.m. in 20F weather to take a walk with a forrester.

Several years ago my neighbors and myself were approached by a local land conservation group to help purchase a piece of land (200 acres) to be put into conservation for perpetuity.  They had received a grant which covered most of the cost and there was a small amount that needed to be raised.  Among 8 whose property abutted this parcel it was a "no brainer" so we will always have this beautiful piece of land as our backyard for a time well past our lifetimes and our children's.

There are trails for hiking and picnicking.  No motorized vehicles.  There are vernal ponds and the beginnings of a beaver dam.  There are foundations from a farm that existed here in the 1700s (very old for us in the US, a mere drop in the bucket for UKers and Europeans).  Jeremy was very knowledgeable and full of information for managing these woodland lots.  Not too many birds or wildlife about today - still a bit too cool.  A couple of weeks might make a difference though.
