Lanterns in the making
Hoi An is known for silk lanterns and these silk worms play an essential part in the manufacturing process. During our first day in this lovely city, we saw worms and cocoons, the unwrapping process and the collecting of the grubs for food afterwards. To finish off, we made our very own silk lanterns and proudly took them back to our hotel for careful packing for the long journey home. Be prepared to be shown them when you next visit William Street and have a witty compliment on hand.
We were impressed with Hoi An and it is rightly popular with tourists. Clean and tidy pedestrian friendly streets meander through the old town and it is easy to stop off at interesting sites on the way. There are varied temples and Buddhist Pagodas, a covered "Japanese" bridge, a Chinese merchants house and a selection of restaurants and interesting shops, all of which are worthy of visiting. We spent more time than was healthy for us in a couple of Tailors and ended up buying tailor made linen shirts, silk jackets and blouses. It would have been rude (and silly) not to. Ready in 8 hours, we will pick them up tomorrow. Hopefully.
