Barn Storming Mondrian
I met Sharon at a Hertfordshire Mercury Tog Squad get together. She is a professional food photographer and initially used this barn as her studio. She has since opened it as a gallery. Sharon invited squaddies to hang pics taken in Herts for the Herts Big Weekend event. I framed my choice and delivered it today.
I walked in and the place was deserted. I searched every nook and cranny. Then I heard a familiar South African drawl but just couldn't work out where Sharon's voice was coming from. Suddenly the middle of a Mondrian-like painting burst open and she appeared from her office. She told me that she has only just had this trompe l'oeil done in readiness for an exhibition of paintings in the style of Mondrian.
This got me researching and I think I understand the appeal of Mondrian's blocks of colour and straight lines better now. His pictures have been described as spiritual. How so I thought? He explains, "To approach the spiritual in art, one will make as little use as possible of reality, because reality is opposed to the spiritual."
