I'm Backing Britain

For those who were around in 1968, it's worth taking 5 minutes to remind yourself of what was going on back then and the campaign "I'm Backing Britain".

I'll spare you the link to Bruce Forsyth but right at the end of the Wiki item, a few interesting notes such as the Beatles White Album "Back in the USSR" has it's origin from the campaign and was intended to be "Back in the UK".

And for those with good memories remember the sentence inspired by the nonsense of the campaign - "Carry On ..Up the Khyber", made during the summer and opening in November 1968, the raising of a Union Flag with the "I'm Backing Britain" slogan is greeted by Peter Butterworth turning to the camera and saying "Of course, they're all raving mad, you know!".

What a disaster and debacle that was. And now on Leap Year 2016, we are heading the same way.

Woke up feeling like I had been hit by one of Brexit Boris' London Buses driving on the wrong side of the road. However after 2 cups of coffee felt great and did the morning duties with a whistle and a skip.

As ordered by the hospital on Saturday phoned the specialist to see if I could pop by in the afternoon to have the wound checked and dressing changed. NO, come this morning. So packed the un-walked dogs in the car and set off for Memmingen. Had to wait an hour but all OK.

The weather was miserable, drizzly rain, +2°C and misty, so had packed all the winter walk gear. Thinking about where to walk I suddenly thought of popping into the organic shop I mentioned a few weeks ago to get more supplies of apple vinegar. I couldn't resist looking at the cheese counter but knew it was hopeless. After studying the 50+ types of cheese, I said to the saleslady, my wife had recently bought something from them similar to cheddar and wondered if they had anything else. Yes, she said, after the discussion with Angie they had ordered a 3kg block of organic Cheddar but hadn't yet unpacked it for the display. YIPPPPEEEE. Out it came, the lady placed the knife about 1.5cm down the block and I made a hand movement to suggest she cut a bit bigger piece. I ended up making this movement twice.

Quickly walked the dogs in the nearby woods and dashed home, fed the chickens, geese and dogs and then........ and then .......HEAVEN ON EARTH.and the rain turned to snow in joy.

Why can't I buy British made Cheddar, Carrs Water Biscuits (part of my First Aid Christmas parcel from the children), Branston Pickle in the shops here? I didn't include the EU Kerrygold Irish Butter in the photo so as not to offend anyone. The celery is from Spain but is not common here as they tend to use celeriac. However, it is often called "English celery". I could have used some Royal Doulton plates but didn't have time to dig it out of the cupboard so the 1990 Ikea plate had to do.

Why aren't London Buses seen in all German cities? By chance, the 63-year-old next to me in the hospital is a car mechanic/garage owner and an absolute nut for US cars. However 5 years ago he bought a 1958 Routemaster and spent three years restoring it. If I understood him correctly, there was quite a bit of wood in the framework.

Just a day or two back I commented on Cowgirls Blip of a cupcake topped off with a Flake. Not available here. I could go on and on. Yes, much of the tinned/dried stuff is available from "British Shops" on the web but it's not the same and fresh things like cheddar or proper back bacon, sausage rolls are nowhere to be seen.

COME ON UK; GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND EXPORT WAITROSE; TESCO; SAINSBURYS and Co over here and show Aldi, Lidl & Co how to do it properly. The day I can go into a British supermarket here, I will buy AND eat one of Nigel's (my mate Nogbad not Farage) Holland's Steak & Kidney Puddings. Even a typical British Cheese Shop would be a start.
