Postman's alarm

This German clock is known as a postman's alarm.  It would certainly wake up the postman and half the street with him.   It is a simple late nineteenth century clock and would probably have replaced the knocker up who went from house to house for a small fee. I have left off the side panel to reveal the simple mechanism running between wooden plates, an increasingly rare survivor.
