HAIRY

On the seafront at the foot of the cliffs around Scarborough Castle is a hole in the cliff known as Hairy Bob's Cave. The reasons behind its existence have been the source of legend and folklore in the town for over a century.

The road around here was completed in 1890. One legend suggests the 'cave' is a makeshift shelter against the stormy North Sea waves, carved out by a shrewd worker employed in the construction of Royal Albert Drive which runs along the seafront. Evidence proves that there was a family called Bobb in Scarborough during this time.

Another popular legend has it that Hairy Bob was a somewhat hen-pecked, mild-mannered fellow for whom the cave provided a den of solace away from the sharp tongue of his spouse. I will let you make up your mind.
