Gouladoo Holy Well
Mindful that it's Derelict Sunday and almost the end of International Holy Well Month (and you get an extra day tomorrow to take part!) I've gone for a double whammy. An extremely squelchy journey down a cattle churned boreen and then you arrive in a field with the most incredible views out across Bantry Bay. In fact you are now looking out towards an ancient promontory fort (that circular bit), now much eroded, with steep cliffs plunging down into the sea. This little well was once visited by unmarried girls requesting information about future marriages. How that worked I have yet to discover. Not much visited these days by the look of it but a rough fence has enclosed it to protect it from the cattle and horses usually in the field. It's a magical spot - the little well tucked into the ridge, three tiers high with a modernish concrete niche on top complete with the little statue. Plastic flowers and coins have been left as offerings and the water looked clear but blooming with pond weed. The light looking north was so strong, and looking towards the well bleached out, so B&W it is.
Thanks to TMLHereAndThere for hosting DS with aplomb.
We're both feeling a bit grotty today - himself is already snotty and I fear I won't be far behind. Apologies for sparse comments.
