Irritating
though I find the politics of the Daily Telegraph (which Mrs E takes) , I cannot but admire a paper which once gave space to a month-long discussion of split infinitives. Lord Bertrand Russell (the 3rd Earl) took a more liberal view than did Mr Eliot.
Writers of computer code understand the importance of syntax rules and the implications of evading them.
Mrs E commented that there are worse things than splitting infinitives, and started talking about men who break wind in company. I am inclined to regretfully concede that she has a point.
