Colonel Sir Archibald David Stirling (1915-90) mountaineer and army officer this maverick Scottish aristocrat founded the Special Air Service in WW2 in Egypt . Described by Field Marshal Montgomery as "quite quite mad" he coined and lived the phrase "who dares wins"
Memorial to him and the SAS is on Hill of Row by Doune 3 miles from his birthplace
