Ancestor...

A few years ago I researched my ancestors, and it turned out that on my mother's side, once we went through the gamblers (very successful card players), we found that the family had been jockeys - very famous at the time. I am the descendent of one of the sisters of the Loates brothers, Sam, Tommy, John and Charles. John died really young, thought to be of a heart condition. He was the eldest, but regardless, his siblings followed suit, Sam and Tommy being particularly successful. Their cousins, sons of one of the sisters were also successful jockeys, but in Belgium - where their careers were cut short by the invasion in the first world war.

So this is one of the collection of racing books I bought when researching them.
