And now , for something completely similar
It is not my usual downy woodpecker, but a hairy woodpecker. Note the much larger beak. It is definitely spring from the birds point of view: the male and female hairys were flirting around the feeders , the house finches were singing , and the starlings are back in force. The woodpeckers of all types are starting to bang loudly on whatever they can get their beaks on....even the metal streetlight (which is not as loud as when they bang on metal gutters). Singularly mild February this year.The day was alternately bright and sunny and incredibly gloomy, so I was not outside too much. I consoled myself with making gibassier's.
