Isle Ornsay Lighthouse
Following on from yesterday's blip, this light engineered by David Stevenson ,brother of Alan ,and of course another uncle of Robert Louis, was first lit in 1857 to protect the entrance to the Sound running between Skye and the Mainland.First to have a condensing apparatus by which the the light shown in different directions varied in strength according to distance from which it was required to be seen. The keepers cottages were sold in 1966 to Gavin Maxwell,he of Bright Water fame together with those at Eilean Bahn which I hope to photograph tomorrow when I go to Kyle of Lochalsh. Richard Frere's very honest biography Maxwell's Ghost tells of the hardships in converting these cottages into holiday homes.
