The Dixie Cups - What Kind Of Fool (1966)
Another example of a sixties release I never heard until recently, when it was played on Brian Matthew's Sounds Of The Sixties show. The Dixie Cups were two sisters and a cousin from New Orleans who had a number of big hits on New York's Red Bird label, but tended to play second fiddle to the Shangri-Las who were on the same label. As soon as one of their singles faltered outside the Top 100 they were dropped.
They then signed to ABC and were produced by Joe 'You Talk Too Much' Jones for a few singles that didn't do much. This single from the period was only released in the UK where it was licensed to HMV. Overlooked at the time it became taken up by the Northern Soul clubs in the seventies.
