Láisvė
láisvė (noun): freedom
Apart from "restoranas" and "alus" (beer), this is just about the only Lithuanian word that I recognise - and only because of the large hashtag placed in front of the Presidential Palace in Vilnius this week. A topical issue in Lithuania currently as explained in yesterday's blip.
It's a complex language to outsiders and has links to Old Sanskrit. "I am trying to learn Lithuanian: Aš bandau išmokti kalbėti lietuviškai."
Not me. Fortunately all the Lithuanians I spoke to spoke very good English.
A couple of extra blips today to add colour and context.
