1877...old for Perth
Historic Gallop House is the oldest private residence in the City of Nedlands in Western Australia. The house sits on prime land overlooking the Swan River and the Nedlands Yacht Club
James Gallop Snr began building the two-storey house in 1872 for his son James and it was completed prior to his son's wedding in December, 1877.
Built in the Victorian Georgian style on a high bank, with steps leading down a grassed hill to the river, it is made of local limestone with a stucco finish. A balcony and verandah extend across the front and rear facades.
Gallop House eventually became run-down and after lengthy negotiation, the WA Historical Society organised a 21-year, rent-free lease in return for restoration work.
In 1983, the building opened as a historical museum.
Gallop House is a rare example of a colonial residence in its original garden setting and had a high degree of authenticity and integrity
