Hand made

'Hand made' goods are invariably expensive, and I often wonder whether they are in fact really made by hand. We bought three small tea light clay lanterns from a local Skoura craftsman today, after he had demonstrated from scratch how he makes them. First he smashes down and sifts the earth, which he then sieves and mixes with water by hand. Once the clay is formed to the right consistency he turns it on his wheel, which is, in fact, the inside of a wheel from a dismembered car - no electricity involved. It was lovely to watch something so useful and attractive being made by hand from water and the land.
