Furze ...

.... of gorse by any other name.
The furze is out and brightening up the landscape - just as well for
when furze is out of blossom
kissing's out of fashion
In fact it always seems to be blossoming. Here are a few interesting (yes, really) things you might not know about it:
* a sprig in a bridal bouquet helped ensure the kissing went smoothly
* an infusion of blossom is good for worms in horse
* also pleasant as a tea for humans, especially if you have scarlet fever
* buds can be pickled and used like capers
* the flowers make a bright yellow dye
* blossoms spread over the floor ensure no fleas will venture forth
* infused with honey and water the blossoms make a good mouthwash
* the wood is excellent for fencing and burning
* the new shoots make an excellent fodder for horses and cattle, rich in everything
* it smells lovely, like coconut biscuit
* the seeds pop loudly in the Autumn
But it has the most ferocious thorns! Be warned before you go gathering.
