Silage Bales

Because of the climate up here the farmers tend to make silage instead of hay. Silage is basically fermented, rather than sun dried grass. Silage is cut and stored without being dried so long hot summers aren't so important!

All the silage used to be cut and stored in pits or silos, but now a large percentage is baled and wrapped in polythene until it is needed. This is pretty important because as soon as the air starts getting at it, it starts to rot and the animals won't eat it. Having it in bales also means it is a lot easier to transport to various fields, byres, steadings etc and can be sold to other folk too.

Okay - that's the lecture over!

Took Ollie and Lucas round the hill in the heavy rain this morning. Pretty dull, but it wasn't cold at all. Had my hood up, but my jacket open! This afternoon we headed to the town for the joys of supermarket shopping, and a visit to the builders' merchants! Also managed to include a tasting and buying session at the fabulous cheese shop. If there is any left, I might blip some tomorrow!
