The Passage

The - entirely glass covered - Passage in The Hague is the oldest existing shopping center in the Netherlands.
It was commissioned in 1885 by the 's-Gravenhaagsche Passage Society, which was co- founded by the famous Hagenaar Petrus Josephus the Sonnaville (1830-1925), who was also one of the founders of the gorgeous Kurhaus in Scheveningen.

The original passage built in 1885 extends from the Spuistraat towards the Buitenhof.
In 1929 the Hofweg has been added to the walking area.

The oldest part ( the Spuistraat- and Buitenhof arm) is built to greatly simplified design of the architects Herman Wesstra jr. And J.C. van Wijk. It is built according to international - oriented neo-renaissance style, while the later part towards the Hofweg is built in an expressionist style.

This is one of the the three grand entrance arches.
