Nicky and her Nikon

Sunrise after a night of heavy snow

Last night we had a lovely meal to celebrate Valentine's Day, although the restaurant was full of families of varying nationalities with small children, so it was more like a a normal supper out. One couple from New York were having a particularly difficult time with their 4 month old baby who was very unsettled and the poor mother could not enjoy her dinner as she was up and down trying to settle the baby. I wanted to hand her a copy of Gina Ford's 'The Contented Little Baby' book and say, well it is 9.30pm and what do you expect when it is way after this baby's bedtime...but I bit my lip and reminded myself that not everyone shares my view on parenting (but then I never had babies crying in restaurants late at night as they were fast asleep in their cots)

It had started snowing heavily at about 4pm yesterday and when we came home from dinner the car, despite having snow tyres, could not make it up the hill back to our apartment. We could not leave it stuck in the middle of the road so Gavin had the brainwave to slide the car back down into the nearest driveway, change direction and then reverse up the hill back home again! That is the problem with a rear wheel drive car, in heavy snow you need front wheel drive to pull you up the hill rather than rear wheel drive to push you up the hill.

I did not ski today as I knew the visibility was pants, so after breakfast Gavin and I went to a bigger town about 40 minutes away to get some things for the apartment and then got back in time for Gavin to have a meeting with a Zurich based colleague who was holidaying nearby. Thomas also did not ski but used the time this morning to catch up learning his Latin set text (Virgil poetry is not much fun) and he has now gone ice skating with his friends in the village. He is very lucky to have three friends from England holidaying here at the same time and he also knows a few local teenagers too from when they were all in ski school together.

The morning started calm and clear, with even a hint of a rosy sunrise as can be seen here. However it is snowing again and I am enjoying relaxing indoors.
