Why does a dog take a treat, bone, anything bury it until it has become offensive and smelly, then delight in retrieving it for consumption in front of their shocked owners?

This little baggage has just taken her tooth cleaning chewy and buried it. Every other day it's eaten immediately. Why today, what is different. She is cracking me up.
