What struck my fancy

By TonyLuxton

Saturday afternoon

in Wisbech, styled "Capital of the Fens". The river Nene, tidal here as you can see from the horizontal lines at the edge, flows through to the left eventually to The Wash. Dominating this scene is the Clarkson Memorial, Thomas Clarkson was born here in 1760. He was a prominent campaigner for the abolition of slavery, and died in 1846.

A street is named after him, as was a local hospital, (a former workhouse) where I worked as a young geriatrician. It was demolished and replaced by housing. Never mind, I found plenty of old folk to treat elsewhere, and now I've joined their number.
