The cold dark sea
Back in 1963 Portland on the Eastern end of Lyme Bay was the Royal Navy base for sea training. Each time a ship got a new crew you spent some time there training and being tested to ensure you were fit to take it to sea and fire its weapons. Over a period of weeks you played war games being attacked by war planes and submarines and stopping it sinking in the event of being hit. The area in which we played would have been some 20 miles off the coast round about where these two ships are now.
It all took place without the holiday makers on the beaches being aware of what was taking place out there and us just dreaming of the how normal people lived on holiday!
